Family sessions

Families, together, with room for every generation

Family sessions are for the adults of a family, such as parents, grown children and a grandmother who lives with you, who want to work something out together: a move, a loss, a decision about caring for a parent, a hard conversation that keeps not happening.

Children and teens join with a parent or guardian when the clinician and the family agree it helps. We do not see a child or teenager alone.

  • Spanish, English or both

  • 80-minute sessions

The method, the pace and what this is not

  • The method

We draw on family systems thinking: each person is part of a whole, and a change in one touches the others. At the first session your clinician names the approach and their training.

  • The pace

How often the family meets is decided together. We do not promise a number of sessions.

  • What this is not

Family sessions are not an evaluation for a court, a custody opinion or a way to decide who is right. We do not see a child alone.

  • Your fee is given in writing before you start.

  • Mercedes sees most families. Fernando joins when two clinicians would help and everyone agrees.

Three questions about family sessions

Does everyone have to come?

No. Start with whoever wants to come. Others can join later, or not at all.

Can our teenager join?

Yes, with a parent or guardian, when you and the clinician agree it will help. We do not see a teenager alone.

What if some of us prefer Spanish and others English?

Sessions can move between the two. In a family, it is common for each generation to be at ease in a different language.
